Years ago, that same 9-year-old girl walked into our office with her parents. They looked so tired and worried. When we finally sat down, they asked me a question I hear all the time:
"What is wrong with my child?"
She was trying so hard at school, but reading and writing were a daily struggle. First, she came to our school readiness program, where a careful assessment helped us find out that she had a learning disability.
Instead of treating this like a dead end, we referred her to our School Plus program. There, we did not just force her to memorize textbooks. We figured out how she learned best, understood her real strengths, and taught her the way she needed to be taught. While words on paper were hard for her, we noticed she had amazing visual and artistic skills.
With that right help, she kept growing and successfully cleared her tenth grade.
Now, her parents are back in our office. But this time, they came to our career counseling division with a new panic:
"You know that she has a learning disability. What career can she possibly choose after Class 10?"
Shifting the Focus: From Deficits to Strengths.
I told them what I tell every parent who sits in front of me: A career is never built on just one school skill.
We need to stop asking: "What is wrong with my child?"
And start asking: "What is my child good at?"
A medical diagnosis is not a boundary that limits a child. It is simply a map that shows us how to guide them. That little girl's artistic strengths became her superpower, not her weakness.
A Message to Every Parent
To every parent reading this: Take a deep breath. Your child is not broken. They just need someone to help them find what they are brilliant at.
